Description

Our client is a research and product development subsidiary working within a cable company. They are the leader in analyzing, searching, and indexing audiovisual content. Their technologies are central to the content search and discovery capabilities that their cable provider offers to users. We currently power TVPlanner TV schedule and search. SmartSearch entertainment search. VideoSearch search of video content.We are searching for 3 Linux Systems Engineers for a 3 month contract to help buildout 2 datacenters. Currently, they have a 3 Linux Engineers and are going to double the team for the datacenter projects as they are essentially doubling the about of productions servers 300 600 overall. Depending on technical performance and environmental fit, one of the three contractors will be offered a long term contract at the end of the 3 months. For the long term opportunity, this will be a year long renewable contract with the potential to go full time. Additional Job Info Technical Environment The technical environment is currently 300 Red Hat Linux 4/5 production servers running primarily Java (J2EE) applications via Apache, Tomcat, and JBoss. They also utilize Foundry Load Balancers, Kickstart to deploy, and RHEL 5's built in virtualization feature, Xen. Project Description The Linux Team will be building out 2 datacenters; essentially doubling their current environment from 300 to 600 RHEL 4/5 production servers. These contract Engineers will not be tasked with building the physical servers their responsibilities start after the new boxes are built and installed on the rack. The Engineers will be laying down the new OS (RHEL 5), installing and configuring the appropriate applications (Apache, Tomcat, JBoss, etc.), ReIPing and virtualizing via Xen certain servers, and utilizing Kickstart to launch them. The physical datacenters are spread out over the country (Chicago, Colorado, Silicon Valley, Newark NJ, and two in Penn) so the vast majority of the work will be handled remotely from DC. They only other local datacenter will be in Reston, VA so there will be occasional travel between DC and Reston. When the datacenter buildout project is completed, 2 of the contractors work will also be finished. Of the 3 contractors, the best fit for the long term opportunity will be selected and will transition into more fulltime daytoday operations on the Linux Team. However, another division will be taking over datacenter operations moving forward and the team will be focused on Engineering and supporting the development groups with their Dev. environments etc. They will also be responsible for future enhancements, upgrades, buildouts to the exciting infrastructure.
